Beautifully illustrated fictional memoir using the idea that the grandfather collected small items and kept them in matchboxes as his "diary", giving opportunity to tell his granddaughter about significant episodes in his life as an Italian immigrant. Loved! How 'bout using as an EOY literature/writing activity, having students reflect on what one small object they would choose to put in a matchbox to symbolize their 1st grade (for example) year. And write about why... A beautifully illustrated account of the immigration experience of an Italian American family. A great-grandfather explains how a collection of tiny objects kept in matchboxes are a journal detailing what he saw and felt as an illiterate child arriving and settling in America. Beautiful illustrations and rich description share this story in a novel way through a child's perspective. I might use this in Gr. 1 Calkins Opinion Unit of Study mentor text before beginning writing about collections.
Italian immigration story told through trinkets held in matchboxes, love it!
