Brokaw’s debut novel would impress even a skeptical reader of biblical mysteries. He opens the novel discussing a missing ancient relic, whose plot parallels a Vatican storyline that is equally as mysterious and thought provoking. While the book’s focus shifts to a biblical mystery (one that has been batted around by such authors as Dan Brown and Joel C. Rosenberg) that leaves the reader wondering if there is any proof behind the narrative. The true test of a stellar book relates to its ability to pull the reader in and keep them entertained, as well as educated. Brokaw does both and keeps the reader wondering what will happen next and what he might have in store in his subsequent novels. This biblical thriller (can I call it that?) is wonderfully crafted and thoroughly enjoyable. It is hard to develop a literary niche after Dan Brown’s explosive novels drummed up so much interest and questions from all sides. It is easy to offend the Church and to presume that things are one way, which might completely go against the grain of what is known by biblical scholars or the faithful. That being said, Brokaw lays out some great alternate theories, going so far as to develop a ‘Creation Story’ that has ethnic and regional variance and yet does not cross the line into offensive. Brokaw’s research abilities and succinct writing style make for great reading and much discussion around the pulpit.Kudos Mr. Brokaw on this gift of a debut novel. I am eager to see what else you have in store in your next novel.
