I tried with this book. I really, really tried. I made it until about halfway before I finally had to give up though. I'd had enough of Andy Whitaker's letters to assorted people where really nothing happens.You see, that is the whole premise of this book, it is everything that the narrator, Andrew Whitaker writes down. Yes, it is as gimmicky as it sounds, but I thought the idea had potential. Unfortunately Andrew Whitaker is the sad-sack of all sad-sacks. His is a literary failure whose life is collapsing down around him, and though I have no idea how this book ends, I'm predicting a heavy implication of suicide. Again, this sounds like it might be an interesting read, but in execution it really isn't. Whitaker complains a ton, writes long-winded letters to his ex-wife and acquaintances who have hit it big in the literary world.The whole thing just turns into a mess after a while, and when I found myself starting to skim over the longer letters and the passages he is writing for some kind of dull novel, I knew I'd had enough. C'è chi dice che è un esperimento interessante, chi che è noioso e basta. Direi entrambi.Interessante perché la storia è raccontata attraverso gli scritti del protagonista, che siano lettere, annunci, liste della spesa o parti di romanzo. Sono esilaranti, divertenti, teneri, tristi, miseri e chi più ne ha più ne metta.Sembra che non venga detto niente di che per tutto il libro, ma non è così. Ogni pagina ha un pezzo della personalità, del passato, delle vicende di Andrew Whittaker, e una lettura superficiale non può rendergli giustizia.Alla lettura superficiale scatta la noia: non ci sono colpi di scena, e l'unica soluzione è farci il callo. In più il protagonista è un fallito, un bradipo, come dirà lui stesso, e oltre a provare pietà per la sua condizione e a fare il tifo, sotto voce, distanti, senza crederci troppo, c'è poco da fare.
