Gortner does a very fine job of putting his fictional characters in and among real historical figures for the Tudor era. At the end of the work, he gives full disclosure of what pieces of history he bent to tell his tale. His characters are flushed out and I cared what happened to them. The "secret" was a believable story that could have happened during that timeframe. For the most part it was a fairly "clean" book. All in all a good romp in Tudor England. I would recommend it for those that like historical fiction and Tudor England. Very well written. Fast paced and action packed. Historical fiction at its best fictional - lots of truth with a whole lot of 'what ifs'. But then I'm a sucker for well written creative history. I liked the many diverse factions all battling for supremacy at any cost. The desire to rule, to be king a powerful temptation. I also loved the narrator - Brendan Prescott - a man after my own heart - loyal and trustworthy. Would read more by C. W. Gortner.
Wonderful! I wish I had read "The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory" first but I am now!
