Rating: 3.5 out of 5I won a copy of this book through the Goodreads First Reads program. I really enjoy Sherry Thomas' writing! This book is just a little too full of angst for me. I love seeing Fitz and Millie grow closer through the years, but I wish we had a little more time to see them together in love.I think I would recommend that a reader new to Ms. Thomas' writing start with a different book, but if you're a fan of hers, you'll definitely enjoy this. I hate it when I invest so much emotion in a book and get a crappy two-page ending for my troubles. I can't find fault with the writing style; this author is excellent. A bit too flashback-happy for my taste, but she writes incredibly well. This is the first novel by her that I haven't loved. It wasn't remotely enjoyable-- I had a lump in my throat for Millie throughout the whole thing. Fitz (who I don't hate at all, though you'd think I would) keeps unknowingly hurting her, and it never stops. Had the conclusion been more satisfying, or had I felt that Millie got at least a fraction of the happiness she deserves, I probably would've liked this book, because I love a good groveling scene and a tearful happily-ever-after. But I finished it still with a lump in my throat and lots of anger, feeling that she deserved so much better.The only hero here was Isabelle, basically. It was all about her. Millie seemed to be the last character on the author's mind. I wish I could unread this.
