Embedded (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

The concept is ok, and makes sense. The cultural environment is overpowered by the clunky terminology. The idea behind the story is a fairly shopworn SF premise. And the combat is about 80% realistic. The other 20% is forgivable, if only because it keeps the story moving. It was an ok read...I think Dan Abnett has some serious talent--I just wish he'd be able to exercise it rather than have it wrapped up and packed into shape by the publishing industry... I found this novel compelling and entertaining. Dan Abnett's characterizations are very good; his world-building was cogent and believable; the plot carried me along and led to a satisfying conclusion. All in all, I'd call this a high-quality workmanlike fiction of high entertainment value if you like reading at the intersection of military-adventure fiction and SF. It makes me wish that this author were writing more of his own novels. I'll be tackling his other solo novel, Triumff, shortly. I fully expect it to be a great read. Embedded, I definitely recommend if you like this kind of fiction. Folks who like this genre will not be disappointed in the quality of the writing, which is excellent.

What do You think about Embedded (2010)?

The premise is good, and the beginning is strong. But it falls apart a bit at the end.

The poor ending ruined this story. Maybe the editor lost the last chapter.

Avatar meets Space warfare. A very good book.
—Marie

Fun, intense. "Noir-infused SF," indeed.
