Evie continues fighting the perils of her post-apocolyptic world, while trying to figure out how to end the game with the other Arcana. Death has a very personal vendetta against Evie, although her death does not seem to be his ultimate goal. The first half of the book is quite good... powers and dangerous situations and steamy sex scenes. No big qualms there, although Jack's love dialogue is pretty nauseating. The second half of the book introduces a kidnapping and Evie exhibits a case of Stockholm Syndrome so deep as to make Patty Hearst blush. Even though Death is a killer and a manipulator and a torturer and a kidnapper, he's also *dreamy* so Evie develops feelings for him. And because Evie betrayed him in a former life, she feels obligated to make it up to him in this one. With sex. Make it up to him with some sex. Obviously I do not need to point out that in no situation at all is a woman obligated to have sex with a man, but a woman is especially not obligated to make up for bad behaviors committed in a former incarnation that she had no responsibility for our control over. And any man who insists that an obligation is owed, is not a good guy no matter how dreamy he is. This plot direction is just too gross for me. Finally aware of her powers as Tarot Empress, Evangeline is ready for battle! In this post apocalyptic world it is every man for himself. With zombies, storms and cannibals swarming Earth, Evangeline is forced to trust her new-found alliance with her life. Things change though, as Evangeline confronts Death. Seemingly drawn to him, matters become more complicated. They become even more complex as Death tells her a terrible truth. This was one of the best romance stories I have read. The plot was intense and the action was balanced well with softer moments. Throughout this book, major character development took place and the ending set up the upcoming book well. Overall, this book was better than the previous book, Poison Princess. I would recommend it to people who like adventure/action/romance books.I.J. Grade 10CLPK Teen Reader's Advisory Board Member
