Eva Braun. Leben Mit Hitler (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

"Who was Eva Braun?", "What type of woman would want to stand next to Hitler?" These are some of the questions that keep running through my head when I see her name mentioned. Eva Braun is a little known historical figure that was so close to one of the worlds most well-known rulers. In 2007 Angela Lambert published "The Lost Life of Eva Braun" which I felt gave amazing insight into the life of Eva Braun which before her no one had attempted in such detail. There is little information that can proven about Eva Braun and the first hand testimonies given about her was self-serving by those giving it so much of what we know has to be looked at cautiously and conservatively. My hope in this book was that it would supplement the knowledge I gained from Lambert's book. In the end I found this book to have some of the same information, but found the majority of the book about those around Eva and not about her. I also felt that this book asked more questions than it attempted to answer like a quickly thrown together History Channel special. The writing was scholarly and dry. I would recommend that readers stick to Angela Lambert's book which was equally if not more scholarly but also entertaining and a great read.Appeal Notes (May contain spoilers):Genre: Nonfiction, History, BiographyPacing: Scholarly, SlowLocation: GermanyStoryline: Character drivenTime: Mainly during WWIITone: ScholarlyComments: I would only recommend this to a student doing research on Eva/Adolf Hitler. I would not recommend this as a cover to cover read. Why I read this book: My interest in women's history and Eva Braun. This is the first in depth study of Eva Braun as a person in her own right, with the usual caveats made in the introduction about there being no such thing as the individual driving history and so forth. It is translated from German and kind of reads like that occasionally. The problem with Eva Braun is that there aren't that many sources that are remotely trustworthy, nor, when you come right down to it, was she that interesting. She met Hitler when she was 17 at her first job, and basically from that point forward dedicated her life to him, even to the point of attempting suicide twice to get his attention. The question then becomes did she influence him in any way, and did any of the Nazi (interestingly they translate Nazi into English and use the English acronym) wives and girlfriends influence politics? It seems like in general they were kept out of the middle of things, but still clearly did have political discussions and know to some extent what was going on. But again, the sources are so murky it's impossible to say for sure.Eva Braun was an adept photographer, particularly of casual scenes, and there are a ton of photos of the worst of the Nazis just hanging around on the porch. It is pretty disturbing, but also fascinating. Anyway, I am not sure why I read this but not sorry I did.
