Every Move He Makes (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

Serious injuries leave Logan with a new face and identity, attending his own funeral to please his intelligence service handler. Meanwhile young Zak is convinced he's being attacked on the streets of London. He's in a rock band and he whiles away his evening cottaging, drinking and taking drugs. Time he turned his life around.Thousands of newly wealthy Russian families have relocated to London for safety, and Zak's father, who has shady contacts, decides to hire a bodyguard. No sooner has Logan been given the job, despite Zak's refusal to take it seriously, than Zak's apartment is trashed and the lad agrees to leave the city. Zak is hugely immature but he co-operates, secretly thinking his minder is good looking. The British intelligence agencies are pleased that Logan is well placed to get some information. However Zak seems determined to self-destruct and takes pills after vodka. Logan has his hands full.I liked some aspects of the tale but thought the funeral was too drawn-out - by several pages - and unpleasant for a family to go through without cause. I also thought that Zak was stupider than his career success and maths degree would indicate if he kept buying unknown pills from people. He's obsessed with his mother's death from a ski accident, when most lads his age are keen to be independent and exploring life. The two young men retire to an isolated area of Scotland where Logan can control the situation, and with returning health comes attraction. This adult story suffers, I thought, from Logan continually saying No, we mustn't get physical again, instead of making friends. We get a few security tips, though nothing we didn't know already, such as not buying train tickets with a credit card and how small a tracer can be.Barbara Elsborg's tale will interest those who want to learn about close protection and fans of thrillers, not just the gay community. EVERY MOVE HE MAKES is a long, absorbing read about two young men who need each other in more ways than one, and a gay reader might give it more stars. I enjoyed this read. Lots of mystery and suspense, but it doesn't get in the way of the relationship, which is contentious and a slow build, but nice and hot.Of course, Logan is the tough body-guard and Zak is the unwilling guard-ee. Zak's a member of a Russian rock band, but his bad boy, self-destructive drinking and drug-taking is more a result of the death of his mother and thankfully the rock star stuff is just fun background information. Logan has issues within issues and he turns out to have even deeper secrets. Naturally, they are attracted to each other, but Logan knows he shouldn't if he wants to keep his charge alive and not get anyone else killed, including himself--and he has plenty more reasons. Zak also has many reasons of his own. But physical attraction speaks strongly, and being together (on and off) definitely adds to their desires. They don't just fall in bed and go crazy when in imminent danger of their lives, though. It's actually a great slow burn with some great sex scenes scattered throughout. This makes SO much more sense in their situations and with their characters and their pasts. The suspense-plot is a good one. Involved enough to be interesting and to carry the relationship along, without overwhelming it. It's definitely more complex than people just gunning for Zak... or his father, who might be in the Russian mafia, or for Logan, due to his past jobs. The nice slow revelations about Zak and Logan's pasts in nice to see, as it bears on who they are and why they act the way they do, and it shows how their relationship is deepening. The secondary characters and plot-lines are very welcome, too. They are important to the overall plot and character development, as well as to their relationship. It's all well-written, nicely developed and integrated, and helps this tale transcend the typical 'bodyguard' tropes, even while staying very close to it. I would love a sequel to this book. The characters, background and story are so worth reading more about!

What do You think about Every Move He Makes (2013)?

A slow read. It picked up a little towards the end. The romance was brief . Both the mc's were okay.
