Every Time I Think Of You (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

2.5 The author tries so hard to write deep, literary prose, and fails so horribly, in the opening chapters that I almost put this book down. So much telling, too, trying to capture long periods of time in a short book. But once the big surprise occurs, mid-book, we get more actual scenes, and the interactions between our two romance heroes becomes far more interesting, detailed, and emotionally compelling. If Provenzano could stick to depicting scenes instead of summarizing events, and get an editor who would kick him whenever he strays toward the overly pretentious in his prose, I might find his future work of interest. The start of the novel is quite unique in that rarely does a book take us into the sex scene before it shows us who at least one of the characters are and gives a reason to care. Somehow it works and I kept reading to find out who they are, eventually leading me to binge reading it. I liked the twists and turns but could have done without the author's foreshadowing, which often comes across as harsh or ultimately untrustworthy. It was as if he felt several chapters needed a hook at the end to make readers keep reading. It was so good that this practice was not needed.
