This book is chilling. Kathryn Casey is such a great writer, my absolute favorite true-crime author. She details the relationship between Linda and her husband James Bergstrom from the beginning to the bitter end. Casey writes the story without deprecation or judgment but presents the facts in a way that shows Linda's transformation from dutiful, abiding wife to fierce, determined fighter. This is a must read for true crime buffs. While reading this book one wonders why this woman stayed with her abusive psychotic husband. She had warning signs of his psychosis early on. Yet she married him and stayed. She survived seven years with a madman. I wondered while reading this book the reasoning she used to endure the torment. As I got further into the book I felt it was the environment she grew up in. Her formative years was no different in theory than her adult years. When one is raised in the same environment that they marry into it is normal for them. They know no other way. I feel after she realized what her husband was doing in his unexplained absences she was to afraid for her and her child's safety to walk away. I feel she may have stayed towards the end to insure he was put away and thus no longer free to hurt or kill her and her child. Self preservation if you will. In the end she herself fought for her freedom and safety. I am sure to her the outcome was worth the sacrifice.
Great book by a great author. James Bergstrom is one scary dude. Hope he never gets out of prison.
