False Victim: Based On A True Story (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
I had read about Kathie Truitt when she was featured in an area magazine and I was excited to find out we were going to read False Victim for book club. Once I started reading her book, I could not put it down...Kathie kept my attention throughout her story to the very last page. Kathie is an amazing woman who has overcome tragic circumstances. You will be glad you read this book. Her story is a real eye-opener! I think this story will make a great movie. This book really grabs you--you just can't believe how this unfolds, each page seems to be a little more horrific as the page before. At first the antagonist seems pathetic yet slowly becomes a dangerous monster who not only tortures the protagonist, but we find out she has a long history of doing so to others and terrorizes the entire neighborhood. The book exposes the impotence of the legal system and demonstrates a terrifying loophole in civil society--a law abiding citizen can be controlled by a malicious manipulator. The whole thing seems un-American and implausible, yet the story is true and exposes that some of the very laws that protect the innocent can be abused in the wrong hands. Thought the book handled this issue well and the fine line between annoying and criminal behavior. Perhaps one of the things that will stay with me for a long time is the currency involved in reputations...how can a "good" reputation be soiled so easily and a bad reputation not stick? Interesting book, glad she wrote it and hope that "Lynn" can be stopped through literature in a way that the law couldn't do it.
