Fastball (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

Fastball by V K Sykes 5 out of 5 starsThis is the first book in a series called Philadelphia Patriots. It follows members of the Philadelphia Patriots Major League Baseball Team. Although, not all of the books are about baseball players, just their friends and extended group. I really liked that this book was short and uncluttered. Jake fell hard for Maddie almost from the first time he saw her, and he didn't waver much in his pursuit of her. He is a player for the Patriots, and she is a sports reporter on assignment with his team. Ethically, they shouldn't be dating, so they already have an obstacle in their way. Add in a couple more things that come up along the way, and it's a fast paced ride that I thoroughly enjoyed. I've already got book two, and can't wait to find out more about Jake's best friend, Nate Carter! Keep them coming!Amanda, My Secret Book Spot This book was okay. The main characters were Maddie and Jake. Maddie is a sports writer and Jake is a baseball star. Jake gets called up to play in the big leagues again and meets Maddie his first day back. There is the insta-attraction and she agrees to meet with him even though it goes against the rules. One of the reason the book was only okay for me is that I really didn't care for Maddie. She was a little too self-righteous and somewhat annoying. I did like Jake though. He knew what he wanted and went for it, he was a take charge kind of guy but not overbearing. I also found the conflict in the book to be a bit ridiculous. The way Maddie handled it and the way it played out just seemed to be beyond reality and poorly executed.Over all, I would probably get the next book in the series because I like Nate too. I just hope his female counterpart is more likable than Maddie was.
