Final Piece, The (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

This book had me on an emotional roller coaster ride, this child is subject to drug addict parents who don't know what's going on right under there own roof....Beth is a strong girl who basically has to grow up fast. The only time she feels safe is at her Grandparents house and with her uncle Tommy, and Uncle Tommy's nephew Ryan. Ryan/Tommy are both her rock, whom she can lean on when times get tough. Beth parents get the help they needed to get there daughter back and Beth is now leading the life she always wanted. This book will keep your attention from day one, you wont be disappointed. 4.5-5 stars. This is Beth's story and it follows her from her childhood all the way to adulthood after college. The story telling from her point of view very appropriately matches the age at which she is at during the time. Beth hasn't had the easiest youth, the daughter of parents strung out on drugs with people coming and going from their house while she is mostly ignored by her mom and dad. That doesn't mean those other people ignore her, though. She's the victim of abuse and doesn't know who to turn to for help and support. Finally, someone intervenes and rescues her, a true hero and father figure of the very best kind, named Tommy. I absolutely loved and adored and revered Tommy for who he was in Beth's life. He is a close family friend, but so much more to her. Beth's sanctuary is her grandparents' home, surrounded by friends and family who love her unconditionally and where she hangs out with Ryan, who is 2 years older and is also Tommy's nephew. The dynamic of Beth with these people is incredible, the love and concern for her well-being is felt on all ends. Ryan is the only one who doesn't actually know what happened to Beth and for the time they spend together, he treats her like a normal person rather than a recovering victim of a tragedy and Beth appreciates that. The chemistry between them heats up and before they can actually explore this potential for a relationship, Beth has to go back home with her parents. Lots of time goes by, years and years, and Beth and Ryan don't really cross paths even though they think about the other person and the "what ifs" although they move forward with different people. Tommy is still an important fixture in Beth's life but she is growing up on her own and coming into her own skin although she has trouble reconciling her old life with her new life (where the new life doesn't know anything about her tragic past). I could really empathize with Beth through all of her trials and tribulations. I also loved how Ryan was such a great guy and when Beth tried to push him away, he wouldn't let her. Tommy's love for Beth was so beautiful and endearing, they had several poignant moments together in the book. Beth's character reaches a pivotal point when she decides not to hide her past anymore and to let herself be her full self, the good and the bad, and she survived but she also succeeded.
