Finding Everett Ruess: The Life And Unsolved Disappearance Of A Legendary Wilderness Explorer (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

I am surprised at the low ratings some readers have given this book. I am on the threshold of going the full 5. Because Everett Ruess did not leave the author much information with which to write, is not the fault of the author or the book. That the low rating reader has never hiked SE Utah or not gotten lost in the high deserts of NW New Mexico is not their fault. Perhaps if you have ever hiked and lost, this would be a more enjoyable story. I have hiked those areas. I have wondered if I would get back before my water and my hydration ran out. I have spent many hours in meditative ponderances of the beauty revealed with every step and the fascination at the wonderment of the history that will forever remain hidden. It was easy to identify with Everett and to follow his path as the author presented it. Not one page was boring. It is quite possible that Ruess's remains will be found behind a rock or uncovered by blowing sand. If you have never hiked the high desert, there may well be many books that would be a better time value for you to read. For me, I am happy to now be able to think about Everett Ruess when I return. Everett raveled by food and burro 1930- 45 in the wilderness of southern Utah, New Mexico, Arizona his body has not been found. He was 20 when he dies. The middle part of the book really dragged on but the beginning and end were much quicker to read. The Utah connection makes him an icon in some parts, a lot of his history is kept in the Marriot Library at the U of U. There is much controversy over his death. There is a large cult following. He was a want-to-be writer and artist, his untimely death propelled him into the public eye. Sometimes it is the unknown that appeals most to the masses. Everyone enjoys speculating.Personally I think his death was accidental - either by animal or fall. The terrain he was last believed to have been in was and still is extremely rugged country.
