Fitzwilliam Darcy, Rock Star (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

This book is about 2 bands that go on tour together. The first band is Slurry made up of Fitzwilliam Darcy, Charles Bingley, and Richard Fitzwilliam. Slurry is going on another tour and they need an opening act, they have already lost 3 other opening acts and haven't finished one tour yet. Slurry is on the search to find an opening act when they come across a band playing at a club. Caroline Bingley their manger suggests that they ask this band if they want to tour with them. Slurry is then introduced to Long Borne Suffering, 3 girls make up this band, Jane Bennet, Elizabeth Bennet and Charlotte Lucas. When the 2 bands are introduced the girls are excited to be going on tour with a huge band well known. Darcy is concerned though about the bands touring together considering that one is an all boy group and the other all girls. Darcy confronts the 2 other members of Slurry and tells them, "Let me make this clear to both of you. If these girls come with us, they're to play. They are not going to be anybody's playthings" (21). Elizabeth overhears this and the 2 bands begin starting off with the wrong foot. As the tour goes on feelings begin to develop between the 2 bands. Charles and Jane were always giving each other loving stares from across the rooms and always talking. Jane and Charles start to date and both Darcy and Elizabeht are worried for them. Darcy doesn't want Charles to be hurt and Elizabeth doesn't want Jane to get hurt. Richard and Charlotte develop feelings but neither of them can admit it and they are just apparently in the relationship for the sex. All is going pretty fine until they go on break, and they don't see each other until the Vmas. The night before Elizabeth and Darcy had their own little night of passion. Darcy explains to Lizzy about what happened to Geriogianna with George Whickham and Elizabeth is appalled that she believed a single thing Whickham said at the video shoot. Elizabeth then feels bad for Darcy and all their bottled up emotions spill out and she ends up spending the night. In the morning Elizabeth wakes up and Darcy tells her he loves her and Elizabeth gets scared and runs out of the house. Later that night at the VMAS Slurry sings a song about relationships being a joke, Jane gets the wrong idea from Charles and thinks he's going to break up with her so she starts to shut him out. Slurry gets in trouble for singing the song and all the girls know what they have to do to make all he boys understand their feelings. The sing a song about saying good-bye to a relationship and Charles then freaks out thinking that Jane got the wrong idea from the song they sang earlier. Both bands don't talk for their whole month off and then Elizabeth realizes that she shares her same feelings with Darcy and then she goes to him and tells him she loves him and then they have an even more passionate next couple of weeks. Jane and Charles get to talking to and Charles explains why he was distant form Jane during the break, Jane understands and Charles and her fly out to California to visit Charles father. Both bands seem to be getting along better with each other and they set out to finsih the tour. The tour goes well and everything seems okay until Long Borne Suffering is at a video shoot with Whickham and he puts "500 pounds of cocaine in Lizzy's bag" (371). Darcy mages to get her out of prison and both bands realize that they as a group and together are more powerful and Elizabeth realizes how much Darcy really loves her. The pros to this story was that it really was like a modern day Pride and Prejudice, it took almost all of the events that happened in Pride and Prejudice and put a modern twist on them. All of the characters stayed the same and they all had the same characteristics with some differences, but overall this book stayed true to Pride and Prejudice. Some cons to writing the story was that is was written to the point where it didn't have much of a plot line. There were to many points of view of particular events and it was just a little jumpy and all over the place. I guess it would be kind of hard to put Pride and Prejudice into a rockstar version, but the writing was just a little messy and not really a good writing style. The tie-ins to Pride and Prejudice were the whole book just modernized. Darcy and ELizabeh had the same issues and there was issues with Whickham. Everyone was basically the same except for Collins and Charlotte they didn't get married and also the fact that everyone was a rockstar. My personal opinion of this book falcuates between liking it and not liking it. There were parts that I liked in the beginning and the whole beginning I liked, but as i got further into the book it stopped making a lot of sense and just seemed to jumpy with no plot line. Every other chapter it felt like was of people having sex and Ill admit that Iwas happy when Elizabeth and Darcy finally hooked up, but all the sex scenes really just took away from the book itself. I don't know if I would recommend this book or not. To people who really enjoy the original book you might also have a different opinion on the book and think it to be to fan fiction for them. It didn't take on a fan fiction vibe, but overall the book was okay. I don't suggest reading it before you read Pride and Prejudice because things that were mentioned in the book might not make sense. This has got to be the greatest Pride and Prejudice adaptation I have read because the twists are so far from the real one and the author really did a lot of thinking about it, it is so apparent that this book has a lot going on yet it all fits into place. For once I didn't dislike Caroline at all, thank God. I actually appreciated her here. Also the relationship between Lizzy and Will was so playfully written that it's like you're thinking the same thing as the author.Really really great book.
