Flight #116 Is Down! (1997) - Plot & Excerpts

Flight #116 Is Down by Caroline B. Cooney is realistic fiction novel. The book is a timeline from when Flight 116 takes off until it has problems. The events are told through the perspective of many different characters and the actions they take when the jumbo jet experiences issues during flight. This traumatic event will alter the lives-for those who live. Patrick,17, dreams of the disaster where he gets the chance to prove himself as an EMT. He is dismayed that as an EMT, he can deliver babies and save lives without any interference, but as a high school student he still needs a pass to leave class. Moving to the other side of town we meet Heidi, the daughter of two wealthy parents, both on business trip leaving her alone in her large estate. Being someone who has it all, she has difficulty fitting in to private school and receiving good grades. What will it take to make her feel as though she belongs? The focus changes to Boston, where Daniel and Tucker, brothers are boarding the plane enroute to their father's wedding. Daniel has become angry at the world after his parents divorced. Will this anger become a hindrance when he and his brother find themselves in a life threatening situation?Saturday: 5:41:15 P.M. The noise began. Heidi is standing outside when she hears the sound. It was like an electric guitar struck on one note, while the volume is being turned up. It sounded like a planet exploding. Like war. The wind had the force of a fire hose. She was deaf. It was huge and black, a flying saucer. It was in her yard, her rose garden. After the deafening roar, there was complete silence. Hearing the screams of the passengers, Heidi finds herself feeling anxious, unsure of what to do next. Meanwhile Patrick is sitting by himself at the coffee shop listening to his radio scanner. He receives the call for the plane crash, he rushes to the scene where he is actually the first responder there. Excited to the action, he heads straight to work. The only problem is who should he help. Within a few minutes people from all over the state were responding to the incident. The book follows the perspective of many different characters and what they had witnessed and their actions following the incident. I would personally recommend this book to anyone interested in action and realistic fiction. I chose this book because I had read other books by Caroline Cooney and enjoyed them; out of all her books, Flight #116 is Down, is my favorite because of all of the twists and turns that occur throughout the book.

Oldie, but a goodie. This will always be one of my favorite books.Heidi is home alone with only her housekeeper, Mrs. Camp and her band of dogs to keep her company while her parents are both away on business trips. Heidi’s house, called Dove House, is far from the small town of Nearing River. Patrick is a Junior Volunteer EMT for the Nearing River. Everyday Patrick waits for an opportunity to prove that he is as good as all the adult volunteers. Heidi and Patrick’s paths cross when an airplane crashes in Heidi’s backyard. Patrick is the first to respond and the two begin the arduous task of saving as many crash victims as possible. The fateful plane carries an array of passengers. Daniel and Tucker are flying across country to attend their father’s wedding and meet their new step-mom. Carly, a runaway finally realizes that she needs the support of her family, flies home to meet up with her twin who she hasn’t seen in years. Darienne is a spoiled, wealthy girl whose main concern is making her connecting flight to Europe. Five-year-old Teddy is flying home to her parents after a vacation with her grandparents. Heidi and Patrick encounter the five specific passengers in hopes of rescuing them all. Unfortunately, not everyone can be saved.Cooney writes from a large variety of perspectives in order to fully immerse her audience in this thrilling book. From rescuers to victims, every emotion, fear, relief, and moment of confusion is made reality by a superior author. Cooney also prevents the reader from any misunderstanding by time stamping occurrences to help place when everything is happening. Flight #116 is Down is guaranteed to manipulate your senses forcing you to jump, laugh, twist with discomfort, or cry.

What do You think about Flight #116 Is Down! (1997)?

I thought “Flight #116 Is Down”, was a good book. It is about multiple characters who are affected by a plane crash. The book is written like journal entries from each character. The plane crashes behind a girl named Heidi’s house. Patrick is the first one on the scene of the crash, he immediately calls for help and begins to transport the passengers up to Heidi’s house. The adults that are responding to the crash look down on Heidi and Patrick because they are kids, and they think they won't be

This book was my jam when I was in middle school. While checking in books last night at the library I came across this throw back and couldn't believe I came across it again after all these years. I instantly remembered how much I loved it. I couldn't put this book down when I read back then, as it was always with the case for Caroline B. Cooney novels. Just as with all her books, this one was thrilling, scary, intense, non-stop, and I shipped the two main characters long before I even knew what the heck 'shipping' even meant. This is a great book I believe for an kid that loves exciting, edge of your seat kind of novels. I always believed that Cooney's novels were the junior versions of David Baldacci, James Patterson, and Lee Child to name a few. If you have a pre-teen, teen boy that is a fussy reader, this book would definitely be a good one to suggest. Girls will love this book as well, but once again I suggest this to any parent that is having a tough time getting a boy to read to give this one a try.

The students have been reading this for years. I've long recognized it as a book to pull students into reading. But I'd never taken it off the shelf until yesterday. It is good! At first I was confused. The author begins by taking the readers into the thoughts and motivations of a lot of characters. I had a hard time keeping them separate. Then the plane crashed (<--not a spoiler) and I discovered I was already invested in the characters; I cared what happened: if they lived or died or what. For a while, I thought this was a girls' book. Then I thought it was a boys' book. Now I think it's just a good book.
