Following Me (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

This book is kind of boring. I just can't pinpoint where or when it gets boring. Perhaps right from the start? Linde was playing with readers' mind, trying to keep each secret of characters in this book. But that's what makes it boring. We want to figure out one problem, but then comes other with hidden baggage. It somehow doesnt really appealing to my mind. So... then I finished this book hastily. So sorry. :( If you’re looking for a book that keeps you guessing—this is it. Devon Sawyer wants to get away—from her parents and their country music legacy that they’re insistent she carry on, from the new life she began forging at college in St. Louis, and from something sinister that she just can’t shake. Therein lies the mystery—what the heck is Devon running from? We meet Devon on a train as she’s traveling to Chicago to spend some time with her best friend and former roommate, Hadley, who has since graduated and moved to the big city. Hadley is under the impression that Devon will be staying a week, but Devon’s trip is open-ended. When will she go back? Will she go back? The one thing Devon does know is that for the next few months, Hadley is the only person who knows where she really is; her parents think she’s in St. Louis and her boyfriend thinks she’s in Paris with her parents. Devon is free as a bird but completely unable to move on mentally and emotionally. She’s haunted by nightmares of someone chasing her.Early on, she meets this great guy named Brennan, but she keeps him and everyone else at a distance, even Hadley, who’s traveling a dark road of her own. As the summer goes by, these two friends will fall apart, one of them will self-destruct and the other will finally figure out that’s she’s running to something as much as she’s running away from something else.I found Devon to be interesting and surprising in a lot of ways, but I have to say that it’s Brennan that won my heart from the get-go. He’s a book boyfriend that I won’t soon forget. My one complaint with this book: It took quite a while to get into the action. I love build up and back-story, but at some point, I need to know what the heck is going on. When that time came, I was fully in, but I wish it had come a bit sooner. I never expected the answer to what was following Devon—never saw it coming! I love it when a book surprises me! The relationship that develops between Devon and Brennan is so tender; it will make you believe that it really is possible to start over.
