I'm really interested in how dark the character of Francesca is and to see how she changes over time. This one goes to some pretty dark, but classic, places. She was yet again chasing the same adversary. Is it going to be the same one in every book? I will probably get tired of it if that's the case. For now I find them interesting. I've rarely read so dark of a heroine in a historical fiction novel and it's refreshing. Probably closer to 3.5 stars, this second book in the series is not as strong as the first. This book could have done with some tighter editing as it seems to lag in the middle quite a bit. However, I was still able to finish it relatively quickly. It followed much the same formula as the first and I hope the third book deviates to prevent each book from telling the same story over and over. What is done well in this book is the character development as we learn more about Francesca and Cesare in particular. I did appreciate that aspect of the book.
Fast read. Part chemistry lesson, part historical fiction, part bodice ripper.

Apparently this series will last 12 books. I want the rest of them now :)
