French Women Don't Get Facelifts: The Secret Of Aging With Style & Attitude (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
Interestingly, my mother, who is French never allowed me to watch her put her make up on or teach me any beauty stuff. She was of the belief I had to learn to do it myself. So I studied. Way Bandy in the 80's with Vogue on my lap along with Saturdays watching CNN "Elsa Klinch"- there's a blast from the past! Then there was Kevin Aucoin, Bobbi Brown( who never sold or said anything worthwhile except blush! Blush! Blush!). Her strength is teen beauty. My best and favorite beauty book is called, "The beauty Bible. ". No longer sold, but it took only the best and tried products and easily showed you how to do everything with salon names and numbers throughout the US and really helped. Honestly, a great deal of this info within this how to book was born from instinct. A lot of her beliefs mirrored mine, like never put anything on your lower lashes. Eventually, through the day, it draws you to high- lights dark circles, mascara flakes and shiny t-zone. Bobbi brown said to put a lighter concealer if tired , joke! You look like a football player. I agree with also, especially as you get older, less is more. I don't use foundation, base and all that stuff. As the day wears on, it looks too made up and it's gross! She also mentioned " the smokey eye look." Americans and the hackneyed kardashian 's are notorious for this. It's unnatural. It's usually(and I wouldn't do it even then, especially a natural blonde) to do that, it's you save it for evening or special events and usually for darker locks and skin tones. Along with youth. Fake eyelashes break your own eyelashes and I should of never used professional acrylic /gel nails. It brittles it for life! I only use gel nail polish now-have to, my manicure only last an hour, but fake nails is very Hollywood. I only did it because I could not grow my nails and I hate chipped nails.Professionally, it's a je ne sais quoi. But everyone is different. But typically make up is to enhance and brighten your look. And your face needs a break! I know someone who half dead or not , at 72 wears make-up every day! Even to clean! Upon asking her why, it's just you and your husband, she was quite candid with me and said she can't stand how she looks with out make up. That's a check up for self-esteem. I immediately felt sorry for her. Bondage isn't funny. Anyways, I Loved the book! Even if you are not French, this book( and it's for 40& over ) a quick read as well with French fashion advice ( quality-not kitschy kind of advice). Personally, I was really surprised that her knowledge was akin to my instinct. Great read! Like her previous three books, this easily-read book contains practical advice (don't overeat, watch your weight by weighing yourself often, choose clothes that flatter, walk often) that French women adopt. I like this approach to aging (do what you can and don't fight nature) rather than the American approach (seems to me it often involves two extremes: give up and don't exercise, overeat, etc. or go for surgical alternatives, Botox, etc.). This is just one of many reasons why I like Guiliano's approach to aging and life.
