Frühstück Mit Katze & Co. (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
*Spoilers* Cute young veterinarian in rural NZ goes to a party. She trips over a guy, they chat, he turns out to be a famous rugby player. She isn't into rugby and doesn't realize her luck, which he finds charming and he asks her out. And so on. Mostly a nice romance with some really funny bits. Only one really amazingly annoying detail. It's got to be the third romance novel I've read in a month that has the girl grown woman(!) getting pregnant within a few months of starting a relationship which then turns a nice romance novel into an exhausting, stressful whinge about not making the guy take responsibility, even if he might want to, and not having expectations and not communicating and fighting but naturally working it all out in the end. Sigh. Can we just not go there? So sort of a "women have evolved into sexually liberated, but very responsible high functioning humans and men are still cave men with no clue about the consequences of sex and so the woman martyrs herself" brand of feminism that drives me mad. Also, there was a big point made about using condoms (at least the first time) but it was her forgetting that antibiotics mess up the pill that got her pregnant? Isn't she a vet? What about the condoms? Did you have tests before you quit using them, given that he's sort of been around? Or did the bit about also there was a hole in the condom part get edited out but the other part about the condoms earlier was so funny it had to be left in? Oh yeah, and the rugby players best friend's wife is having fertility problems. So there's that.*Deep breath* So there were some flaws. And it was the middle of the night. This is another quintessential kiwi novel and I loved it. The main characters are Helen, a rural vet, and Mark, a Blues rugby player. They meet by chance and he is quickly smitten, but only two months into dating, she falls pregnant. This is where things start getting a bit fraught. The author has the nack of writing light romantic chicklit with humour and heart, and also captures the essence of New Zealanders. I particularly loved reading about Helens vet life, as I myself worked in a vet clinic for many years. This novel will appeal to a wide range, and I even think the odd man would like it ... Plenty of rugby talk. A lovely read. Highly recommended.
What do You think about Frühstück Mit Katze & Co. (2013)?
Manages to make meeting an All Black into a sweet, down to earth story. Loved it.

I didn't feel the chemistry between characters and a bit long, but cute enough.
