From Barcelona, With Love (2011) - Plot & Excerpts
When reading a low-brow, just-for-fun junk novel such as the Mack Reilly series, I generally forgive the incongruous plot lines, the unnecessary descriptions of the clothes the characters are wearing, and the problems with poorly handled antecedents. However, I found it unforgivable that the author presented as fact that tired, old, and completely untrue myth about the Castillian ceceo being due to a king with a lisp. I will forgo the linguistic explanation of why this is false, as well as the historical evidence that also proves it untrue. Suffice it to say, it is untrue and it irritated me. I was also put off with this audio edition since the reader attempted at times to pronounce Spanish words with a Spanish accent and made a mess of it. Marbella with the double ls being pronounced with an l sound while the word castillo had the y sound (except for once when she pronounced it castelo as if they were in Italy???) really grated. 3,5 étoiles si c' était possible.Belle histoire, très agréable et facile à lire, bon début d’intrigue mais tout cela manque de profondeur à mon goût. Ce qui est dommage, parce que cela pourrait être un super roman.Je trouve regrettable que la guerre entre Lorenza et Sunny ne soit pas plus développée, en lisant la quatrième de couverture, je m’attendais à une espèce de « combat de coqs » et là j’ai trouvé leur joute verbale minimale par rapport à ce que je m’attendais à lire. Ca m’a paru un peu bizarre que Sunny ai accepté par 2 fois de reporter son mariage à cause d’enquêtes alors qu’en lisant le livre on n’a pas l’impression qu’avec Mac qu’ils soient fiancés... Quelle femme peut accepter de repousser 2 fois son mariage ! Mac à la demande de la famille part à la recherche de Bibi, j’ai trouvé qu’il l’a retrouvait un peu trop facilement à mon goût, que ces recherches n’allaient pas très loin. Et la fin est un peu trop facile et rapide à mon goût, genre tout se règle en douceur sans problème…Mis à part cela on s’attache facilement et rapidement à Sunny et Mac, on a envie tout au long du livre de voir évoluer leur couple, et de voir quel soutien ils ont apporté à leurs amis et ceux-ci leur rendre la pareil dans ce tome.Toutefois, j’ai adoré la fin car on sait ce qu’il advient des personnages. Les dernières pages m’ont donné envie de lire un des précédent tome dans lequel Sunny a failli quitter Mac pour un autre homme…

Loved it -- there was a compelling mystery -- love and exotic locals. Such a fun read.
