Frozen Hearts (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

I really enjoyed the last college hockey love story I read by this author, so of course I was going to read this. Frozen Hearts featurs a completely different couple so can be read as a stand alone but I enjoyed Pick & Pucks also if you’re looking for a story about a hockey jock and figure skater falling in love I’d recommend checking it out. There were quite a few similarities between the two books. One of the MCs was kind of famous or on the precipice of it as soon as he graduates college and goes pro in the NHL. Problem is he doesn’t want to go pro because he’s tired of pretending to be someone he’s not. There’s no way he can be openly gay and play in the NHL. So, Erik decides to throw away an opportunity most guys would dream of having because he just can’t do it anymore. He’s haunted by his betrayal of his first love, Tyce. When he was a teenager his father found out about his best friend/secret boyfriend and his relationship and sent Erik away. Erik was young and scared. His father held a lot over his head so he went through with the plans his father made for him but at a very high price. Erik should be happy but he’s not. The regret he feels over breaking Tyce’s and his own heart all those years ago is something he doesn’t want to feel again.Another similarity is all the gay bashing and beatings. There are quite a few again in this book. The characters are very quick to brush them off for the most part but I found their avoidance frustrating most the book. It’s explained away pretty well because Erik’s character kind of lives in his own world and has no problem ignoring reality. It was all just a little too much,A third similarity is the past love coming back to complicate the MC’s life. This time is was a blessing because Tyce and Erik were SO good together. They had an amazing connection that was sometimes sickly sweet but who cares. I was into it. The tension built once Tyce comes back into his life was great. I was anticipating when they’d finally give into their feelings that never went away. I enjoyed reading about the how even though there was so much hurt there, they were just so happy to be together again. How everything else, and there was a lot, was secondary to them finally being together again. Erik isn’t officially out for most of this book so that adds a layer to this as well. Then there’s the secondary characters. I LOVE them. So much fun and once again they really fill the story up with so much warmth and sense of who these people are. They add humor and support for Erik and Tyce who needed it. I particularly liked the side love story between Erik’s roommate, Marshey and his sister Arielle. I thought it was cute. Sam was fun but a little over the top at times. I’d still like to read his story.I enjoyed the amount of ice time the guys had in this book. If you like hockey or college guys you might want to check this one out. There is quite a bit of drama and angst so prepare yourself or grab this when you’re in the mood for a good dose of it. Some really funny scenes. The focus of the book is really Erik and Tyce getting back together and making it work despite many obstacles. The best part is they don’t care as long as they have each other. 3.85Good story, likable MC's and secondaries...but how many times can you get beaten up? I know its rough out there, and not every place is MA, but this book makes it seem like a whole town/campus is going to lose its mind when a guy comes out and beat him and everyone he knows. I liked the story but I get sick of the message that coming out is going to mean beatings all the time. very enjoyable, but that point annoyed me.
