This is a captivating read, interspersed with love, loyalty, acceptance, kinship, fellow-feeling and mystery. Reule is the king, the 'Prime' of the Sange tribe, a tribe of telepaths and empaths who are thoroughly misunderstood by others for their supposed brutality and violence. Reule has worked very hard, against all odds, to built the city of Jeth and take care of his people. When one of his Pack members is captured by the vile Jakals, Reule attacks the Jakals, kills them and in the process discovers his soul mate whom he will later name ‘Mystique’. He is inexplicably drawn to her sorrow from the very beginning, even before being aware of her existence. Mystique cannot remember her past making it very clear to Reule that there is something horrible that is forcing her mind to shield and protect her from that sick memory. There are several bruises on her body to testify Reule’s theory. He also realizes, not only with his telepathic power but also with his whole being, that she is attracted to him and he himself is caught in the haze of lust for her, so much so that his whole Pack can feel the whiplash of such intense physical arousal. She gains their trust when she cures one of the Pack members by drawing his illness into her own self. Gradually everyone around her is caught up in her gentleness, her simplicity, her courage and her kindness. When tragedy strikes, she and Reule work together and explore their intense feelings for each other. Reule is an intelligent, fair minded, generous king who cares keenly for his people. He sees through an out-lander woman, feels her sorrow, accepts her as his own, and protects her fiercely. These make him an extraordinary man and then some. Mystique, in her own way, is no less strong or perhaps even stronger. She, despite her petite physique, is a fighter and survives on her own before Reule finds her. Their souls sing to each other.The other members of Reule’s Pack are also interesting, with different varieties of ‘pathic qualities. It is a treat to watch them work in perfect harmony as their minds are always connected and attuned with one another, though it is not always that comfortable, as the other Pack members realize, due to Reule’s perpetual raging physical attraction towards Mystique.The language, at times, oscillates between the historical and the contemporary. 4 1/2 stars. Very entertaining paranormal romance. I enjoyed the different world and creatures created by the author. I thought characters were very well done--I got my super possessive alpha male lead, and she may seem weak, but can take care of herself heroine. Good chemistry and romance, and spicy but not over-the-top intimate scenes. Writing style was easy to follow, and had a lot of exciting action/suspense scenes. The only "cons" I had with this particular book is I felt the last conflict ended too quickly, and it looks like this is a stand alone book and not a series. I felt secondary characters were well defined, and the author left too many unanswered questions to let the story drop. I really wish there were follow up books.
