Glimmers (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

Others have gone into long synopsis of the book, so I will try to be brief. In Chapter One, Paige drops the kids off at school and enjoys time to herself to shop for a vintage outfit that she really loves. She goes home to try it on. The last thing she puts on are these leather boots that she fell in love with. One minute she is at the kitchen sink, and the next, she is sort of falling and seeing lights. Then, for several chapters, the story is about a young girl in the 1980's who fell in love over the summer when she was working and trying to create the perfect recipe to win a blue ribbon at the state fair. I don't know if it was mentioned that Paige was viewing all of this through memories or was actually in the other person's body with them at the time. There are three stories within the main story. The third one was my favorite. But, the gist of the book is that Paige can try on a very meaningful item that belonged to someone else, and can see their memories. It reminds me of these psychics who ask to hold something meaningful to the deceased, then pick up the energy of the objects in order to do a reading on them. The third memory is by far my absolute favorite! Paige's Mom brings to her her great-great-grandma's dresser drawers that came over from England and had been passed down over generations. There is a secret drawer that Paige searches for, and she finds cameo earrings. When she puts them on, she is watching and feeling her great-great-grandmother's memories sort of as they are happening. This story within a story is my favorite because it is Regency, similar to "Pride and Prejudice", only I believe that it is so much better!!!! Ms. Brooke could write that kind of book, and I would be thrilled to no end!As in the other cases, she snaps out of it to find herself right where she was when she "traveled". Then something happens that is funnier than all get out at her sister's engagement party that could really cause the fur to fly. Of course Paige planned it and had it at her house. Her husband saves the day. Then her Mom goes into very silly antics...... and you just have to read the book to find out what happens next. The book seems to have a lot of plates in the air at one time, and is a bit confusing if you are not paying attention. However, all makes perfect sense in the end.... the book is fantastic! I love Ms. Brooke's writing style and imagination. There are two more books in the trilogy coming out, and I am sure to be in line to buy those. If you like to be kept guessing what is coming next, you will love this book! It is refreshing and a good entertaining read. You will like it. *I was given a copy of this book to read and give my honest review. The title is absolutely perfect for this book. Paige gets just a glimmer into the lives of three women, all whom are connected back to her own life in some way. This new talent has some great points to it, and some drawbacks. The best part is that after getting a glimmer into someone else’s life, Paige aquires some of that person’s actual talent or a slight bit of their personality. The first person Paige glimmers is Delilah Jones, a young local girl working at the local resort in Lewisburg, West Virginia. It’s the summer of 1988, and it is the classic Dirty Dancing theme of upper class vs. lower class scenario. Delilah falls hard for a young William, and things don’t quite work out as planned thanks in large part to his mother. When Paige returns to her life, the worse-than-horrible cook she is has been transformed into a novice chef. Then, things get up close and personal for Paige. She is helping her sister plan her wedding…only, her sister doesn’t seem too interested in her own wedding! Paige is running the entire show – even selecting the dress, trying on the ring for size, and acting as the stand-in for the final fitting. But when Paige goes to pick up the ring and tries it on for size, she is one again caught in a glimmer, and what she learns about her sister sets up the entire rest of the novel. Her sister is indeed keeping a HUGE secret!Paige is, to say the least, furious with her sister. Worse yet, her own husband works with her sister’s fiancee. It all feels so bizarre to Paige, who drags husband Elliott into the mix.The last person Paige glimmers is an ancestor, after receiving her dressing table and antique mirror. As a child Paige would search the dressing table for the long-rumored hidden compartment. It is here that Paige finds, at the behest of her mother, a pair of Emma’s cameo earrings. Emma brings fashion and a big sweet tooth into Paige’s life. When Paige agrees to host Hailey’s bridal/couple shower, she also decides to take the bull by the horns and help her sister out…only it ends up being a complete disaster that Elliott so graciously and smoothly intercepts. Paige comes face-to-face with more than one person from her glimmers, and along the way is resolved that she is not cuckoo in her glimmers.

What do You think about Glimmers (2000)?

Read more like three short stories. Not bad but a little flat.
