Good Talk, Dad: The Birds And The Bees...and Other Conversations We Forgot To Have (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
For years, I have enjoyed Bill Geist because of his wonderful, warm, and light-hearted contributions to CBS Sunday Morning. This book is a continutation of that style and it is obvious that the apple does not fall far from the tree when you hear Willie Geist share his side of the story. This was a fun read (or listen) and had many laugh out loud moments....especially Bill's conversation about the Rolling Stones in about Chapter 10.Enjoy!!! It would be hard to count how many times I laughed while reading this book. It's very interesting to note the contrast in reviews between those more familiar with Bill (ie. older) and Willie (ie. younger). I wished at times that it had been a little more linear (I think that's just my chronological craving), but it covered so much territory. I think one of my favorite stories was about Willie and his mom trying to get the old red jeep down to Vanderbilt in a snowstorm. It's a miracle they made it!I became familiar with Bill Geist through CBS (didn't realize he had a NYT career before that) and his fun stories (he visited the Toilet Seat Museum in San Antonio shortly before I did), and how downright clever he is. I really enjoyed the ideas that others would re-type his work to see what it is to write like that, and that we can all probably find unique and funny things in our surroundings we previously dismissed as mundane.I was a bit put off by the stories of the wink-wink underage drinking; I guess that's not really a fault of the book, just a disappointment. Taking a 3 yr old to the police dept for discipline raised my eyebrows a bit, too, although I understand. To me, the epilogue was a wonderful conclusion. As funny as the book is, it's also very touching. What a privilege to be in such a loving, funny family. When I think of the number of children in dysfunctional situations, I wish they could experience something more like the Geists'.All in all, a fun read. I am suggesting my husband read it next.
What do You think about Good Talk, Dad: The Birds And The Bees...and Other Conversations We Forgot To Have (2014)?
3.5 stars. A good clean father-son memoir. Written with lots of humor and love.
