Spectyr starts out not long after the end of the first book, Geist. Merrick and Sorcha are in trouble, and Sorcha's soon to be ex-husband/ex-partner is trying to shoulder Merrick out of the way for unknown reasons. Then they get a warning that the Pretender, the cursed Prince Raed is in trouble in a kingdom of the empire ruled by a mysterious Prince whose face has never been seen. Coincidentally, our heroes get the chance to travel to this kingdom, escorting home the ambassador who is negotiating the marriage of his prince's sister to the Emperor. Shortly after, the Emperor's sister (who Raed saved in the previous book) follows.Spectyr manages to avoid middle-book syndrome. The action was exciting, and we get a bit more information of the early days when the Otherworld broke through, unleashing the supernatural on this world that is half straight fantasy/half steampunk.I thought it was a step up in quality (as it should be, since presumably writers improve with each book). But definitely don't read unless you've read the first book.(and the covers of this series are gorgeous, although the Sorch looks about twenty years too young) Meine Einschätzung:Dies ist also Bd. 2 der "A Book of the Order" Reihe von Philippa Ballantine und ich kann euch sagen, dass ich geradezu begeistert war. Der leichte und flüssige Schreibstil der Autorin war einfach super zu lesen. Mit wenigen Worten ließ die AUtorin die Stadt Orinthal und Hatipais Grausamkeiten in meinem Kopf zum Leben erwachen.Bd. 2 fand ich noch spannender und fesselnder, als Bd. 1 dieser vierteiligen Reihe. Von Seite 1 an war ich gebannt und musste einfach erfahren welche Abenteuer Sorcha, Merrick und Read erleben würden.Die Wendungen und Ereignisse in der Handlung ließen mich mehr als einmal mit offenem Mund da sitzen. Mit so mancher Überraschung hätte ich nie im Leben gerechnet.Die Charaktere haben sich deutlich lesbar weiter entwickelt. Schien es zu Beginn von Bd. 1 so, dass Sorcha Merrick überragt, so befinden sich die beiden Diakone nun miteinander auf Augenhöhe. Auch die zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen entwickeln sich stetig weiter, wobei ich mich fragen was Sorchas zukünftiger ExMann im Sinn hat.Wie es bei mehrbändigen Reihen üblich ist, werden einige wenige Fragen beantwortet nur um Platz für neue Fragen zu machen.Inzwischen spiele ich mit dem Gedanken Bd. 3 und 4 auf engl. zu lesen, da das Erscheinungsdatum für Bd. 3 noch in weiter Ferne liegt und ich doch unbedingt wissen muss wie es weitergeht!Mein Fazit: 5 Sterne - insgesamt ein sehr starker Bd. 2, der Lust auf mehr macht!
