Hadashi De Bara Wo Fume, Vol. 1 (2008) - Plot & Excerpts

Review and rating for complete series (9 volumes)A wonderful, page-turning romance in a very Radway-shoujo mixed style. It is melodramatic fabulousness! Not realistic by any means, but I was transported enough to not care. The art is smooth bishounen, roses and sparkles shoujo, and cute children, but the historical aspects of the illustrations added a fresh, interesting element. I recommended it to my younger teen daughter, and she loved it. I picked up this series to read for the Garden Party Challenge in the Manga Book Club with not a high interest in actually reading it... but with manga, I'll read just about anything because I never really know what I'm going to end up loving. The first volume of this series was pretty interesting. It seemed to move relatively fast paced from the "this is what happened before the main story" part to the main story... but oh well. It's understandable, we get the gist, that's all that matters. I'm really curious to see how this manga turns out... however, I have a sinking feeling it's going to be similar to Boys over Flowers, where Sumi hates Soichiro because he's a complete ass to her and loves and adores Nozomu because he's kind and sweet.... but then eventually she'll start to change Soichiro and he'll become less of an ass and they will really fall in love -_- It just feeds into the "nice guys finish last" nonsense that we don't want... girls shouldn't really believe they can change possessive jerks like Soichiro, Tsukasa, and Edward Cullen... but lately in literature (and even in past like Boys over Flowers), we're glorifying this abusive asshole guys and essentially belittling the guys with big hearts because the leads always fall for the jerks. If a guy ever treated me the way those guys did, I'd beat the living daylights out of him. Ah... I digress... I'm getting a bit off topic here :-p Haha! Back to the manga - it is a short series, so hooray for that... and despite my general annoyance and dislike for what I just discussed above, I will probably enjoy the series. And who knows, maybe Ueda-san will surprise me.Oh, one thing I really did like, though.... the fashions!!!! I loved everything Sumi wore and wanted to wear it myself! Great fashion is always a mega plus for me ;)

What do You think about Hadashi De Bara Wo Fume, Vol. 1 (2008)?

kinda creepy, and as Dramacon says, it's always the sister, I hate Nozomu.
