Heck (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

For such a silly, pulpy, premise and a very simple, cartoony aesthetic this manages to be a surprisingly deep and emotional book. It borrows heavily from Dante's Inferno, which I love, and turns it into an adventure story of sorts. Maybe I'm too easily sucked into stories, but there were a number of reveals that I was quite surprised at, and the characters turn out to be more complicated and interesting than you might expect from the cover. I found the stuttering dialogue a little annoying at times but that's a minor complaint. This is an excellent adventure story about a guy traveling through Hell in order to get some information from a damned soul (he does this as his job, since he inherited a house with a portal to Hell in it) that ends up being emotionally rich and moving, as well as disturbing in its presentation of Dante-inspired imagery, and inspired in the ideas it comes up with, such as the time-bending method of communication between people in the underworld and people back on Earth. I really enjoyed it, to the point that it's something I'll still be considering for some time. I'd say it definitely earned any spots it had on "best comics of 2013" lists.
