Kate Champion is a brilliant, modern anti-heroine. I don't always agree with her, but I am always on her her side. Her love affair with Jaylee is visceral and damaging and selfish and nonsensical, yet I cringe with fear when anything gets in its way. Married to an apparently great guy, with two children and plenty of money, Kate's self-indulgent affair with a morally questionable, poor, twenty-two year old tests my virtue and pragmatism (much more the latter than the former, frankly). Why does she do it? I understand the lust, even the affair, but why take it so far? Because she has to. It's just that simple. In Heights of Desire, Mara White manages to produce in me the same controversial struggle between should and must that her heroine faces throughout the book, and against my better judgment, I want Kate to get whatever she wants. Oh goodness….where to begin? Can we say “Roller-freaking-coaster?”Kate is a 42 year old wife and mother of 2 daughters. Herhusband, Robert, is a lawyer from uptown. To outsiders, Kate haseverything. But when Jaylee and Kate make eye contact oneafternoon, she is done for. Drugs, sex, booze, money and thelaw are relevant in this book. Hold onto your sanity because youmay just lose it. I was left in shock and shaking my head indisbelief.The characters were quite enjoyable. Kate really dug herselfin one heck of a grave. She loves her husband but there is thenew found chemistry with Jaylee. I don’t want to say that hemakes her feel young, but he helps her transform into a desirablewoman. And Robert picked up on that change. Robert thinks itsher way of spicing up their marriage and had no idea that it wasstarted by a new man. I did feel sorry for Robert in the beginningand that changed in the duration of the book. I’ll just say he is atrue definition of a lawyer.The love between Kate and Jaylee is so different! At times, Iwas scared for Kate when she was around Jaylee. He is crazy,intense, shocking, and drew me in. He has pasiòn sin vergüena(passion without shame). If I met him on the street, I would not beattracted for him, I would fear for my life. He was so freaking hardcore and borderline creepy in my mind. But gosh did he leave animprint.My favorite character is Sarah. This spitfire is the bestfriend of Kate. When searching for validation, advice, or aconfidence boost, Sarah was Kate’s galPlease let me begin by saying that I do not like to readbooks that contain cheating! It’s just a hard limit for me. ;) I had tokick my preconceived notions to side and persevere. And OMGam I glad I did. I liked this book a lot. I loved the Spanish that wasin the book, it brought a different element. It just took me thatmuch deeper into the book. For those that can’t read spanish, youmay need to use a translation site. This is not a beautiful,whirlwind romance. This is every bit of f-ed up. Plot twist areevident and there is one heck of a cliffhanger. And even though Isaid I can’t do ‘cheating’, I will definitely read the sequel comingout in 2014: Fear of Heights. 4 smooches for Heights of Desire byMara White.Sarah
