Her Mad Hatter (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

I loved this book. I loved the characters, the concept, the world Hall created. Her Mad Hatter is an interesting take on Alice in Wonderland, obviously. In this novel, Hall's Hatter has to find his mate or he will die, and of course Alice, though she isn't the same Alice from Carroll's story, is his mate, but Hatter's insanity keeps him from seeing her for who she is.I gave this novel four stars because I really did enjoy it, but there are some issues that made me think for a second about giving it three stars. The biggest issue I had was pacing. One minute the story moves along at a decent pace, but then all of the sudden things speed up, things are glossed over, like her drunk as a skunk scene and the sex scene, other scenes feel rushed, especially the ending when Alice comes back to the real world. I think if the author had spent a little more time fully exploring Hatter's world, their relationship, the prophecy, etc., the story would have been much better than it was. When she does slow down and delve into the story it is amazing and that is about 75 percent of the novel, but a quarter of it felt hurried.I will most definitely read more of her work in the further. This short novel is a steamy take on Mad Hatter and an Alice. And it's fun. Very fun. The story is solid and inventive. Although I have a somewhat different view of Mad Hatter, Marie Hall's is believable and intriguing. And the way she tied him to Wonderland was something I had never considered before. As long as I told myself this story used extensive literary license and that Hatter wasn't really Hatter, just someone's view of him, I was able to just enjoy a hero that's actually pretty close to the oddball wizards I love in romantic fantasy. With a touch of chaos/madness, of course. The concept of more than one Alice visiting Wonderland was interesting. Though I'm not sure how I felt about the concept of a "true" Alice, I did enjoy Alice Hu. She was a nice, contemporary take on the Alice role. The writing is good. It flows very well and Ms. Hall can be downright hilarious at times. Wonderland is well-described, and even the more normal aspects of it are explained in a way that makes perfect sense.I think I loved the last two twists best. Though they flowed organically from the plot, they still took me by surprise. I like it when a book can manage that.On the downside, there wasn't enough time in the story, I think, for Hatter and Alice to show any real emotional connection. There was Destiny and Instaluv, but not a lot of evidence for a long-term relationship to form beyond the concept of Wonderland accepting Alice. There are two sex scenes that are somewhat graphic (not nearly as graphic as some of the PNRs I've read) and a lot of descriptions regarding attraction, but again, I felt the emotional component was somewhat lacking. That's really my only major quibble with what's otherwise a very good, spicy romance.

What do You think about Her Mad Hatter (2000)?

Pretty short, but I loved the madness in it. The Mad Hatter is always a fun character to read about.

Great idea, but too desperately erotic for my liking. not my cup of tea (excuse the pun)
