This book is a quick read at only 190 pages but the story packs a punch. I found it hard to put down. I found myself moved by the courage of Franciszka & her daughter Helena. The hate and prejudice portrayed in these pages towards the Jews, in not so long ago Nazi occupied Europe should give us pause to examine our own moral compass today. Unfortunately the same hate still goes on today, just toward different ethnic groups by different regimes. I thank the author for sharing this family inspired story. We need reminders of such courage & compassion in a world where it is sorely lacking. Highly recommend this book. Should be required reading in school when studying the Holocaust and WWII. I've read many books about the Holocaust and the sheer numbers of people who suffered makes it somewhat difficult to really get inside it...to connect. This book, though very short, manages to get you intimately acquainted with these people and feel a bit of what they felt. What courage they had! You can't help but wonder, "What would I do?"
Nice easy read but a read with substance! Couldn't put it down and finished it in an afternoon!

Another look at the suffering during WWII and the attempt by ordinary citizens to save Jews.
