This book and its sequels have probably been the best books I've read this summer. The novel has historical references to the Tsar as well as comrade Stalin and they both look for help from this legendary detective, Pekkala who resembles Sherlock Holmes to help solve cases that all involve his past. I truly could not predict the endings of these books and that is was kept me intrigued the whole time. I recommend these books to anyone who likes a good mystery. What a great new series! Takes Russian history and paints it with despair on a brutal canvas. The former protector of Tsar Nicholas is brought back from a hellish existence in Siberia to help Stalin discover if bodies found in a mine belong to the royal family. Pekkala makes a startling discovery. Not all the bodies are there. What happened to the missing bodies and a search for the mysterious secret gold of the Romanovs made for an amazing tale of honor and treachery.
A little trouble with pace and continuity, but enjoyable with good historical background.
