Hidden Crimes (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

Loved it! It's been a while since I read an Emma Holly book. I forgot how much I loved her writing style. Characters were great--I loved catching up with the characters from the previous book. What sets this apart for me was the fact that the h--Elvina is soooooo alpha--even more than the H--Nate. Normally this would turn me off of the book--I prefer the H's over the top, but the author doesn't in a way that still makes Nate the strong, possessive alpha male I love in my books. Steamy scenes, good plot with the right amount of drama. Would recommend. 3.5-4 starsWhile, again, there's a predictability and an almost unbelievable pairing in this story between Nate a werewolf and Evina a tigress, I enjoyed the story more than it's predecessor, "Hidden Talents". While cats and dogs don't usually mix, there is something more genuine about this strange pairing - more chemistry and more emotional bonding. The relationship seems to happen quickly, but we're also told that these two have been checking each other out at the grocery story for some time. Because of the whole cats-dogs thing, they've ignored one another, and Evina has twin cubs - she can't afford to go for a player like Nate.Except Nate is looking for something more... and that is a family and a chance to settle down. Evina has a ready-made family, and she's already sown most of her wild oats. These two are really perfect for one another. Not being familiar with a rivalry between cops and firemen, I'm not sure how accurate that is, but I can see it. So, beyond the cats-and-dogs thing, these two are overcoming a lot together to make this all work. And Nate is still fighting his Alpha tendencies... except Evina and the firemen in her "pack" also sense his Alpha-ness and simply accept it. In an almost old-fashioned way, Evina, an Alpha female, requires a male who is Alpha, too - Alpha enough to take her in hand. And I can respect that and relate to that, even though it seems improbable and contradictory; women are supposed to be independent and Super-Women, and yet, deep-down, we often want a man to take care of us, so that we can take care of everything else on our plates. We need to feel cherished and safe and protected. And that's the dynamic between Nate and Evina.I have to admit, however, that as predictable as the story is in many ways, there was a twist at the end that I wasn't quite prepared for. And while it might have seemed like too little too late, there were clues; and the timing did precipitate an interesting end to the whole power-stealing dilemma.Others from Nate's pack (Adam & Ali and his other mates) do make an appearance in this book, which is reassuring.
