High Spirits: A Tale Of Ghostly Rapping And Romance (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

I read this to review it as a possible choice for my son's 8th grade history class project. It is easily read, full of cultural etiquette for the time period, and based on real people. His class project was to read a historical fiction book and I thought the paranormal angle might capture his interest more. This would definitely keep him interested and provide a fun story as a project. I enjoyed it, too! The book started out as a creepy ghost story, utterly convincing me the ghosts and spirits were real until the prank was revealed, but turned into a strange, twisted love story with a terrible ending as the girls grew up. Add the fact that it was also historical fiction and I just about hated the book. It had great facts about the time period that were relevant, and it was beautifully written, but otherwise I did not like the story itself at all. The main characters Maggie and Kate were fun, and I liked them, but as they grew older I got confused and angry with Maggie and ended up loving Kate. The title was deceiving, and I hope no one reads it in hope of a scary ghost story, because it is just the opposite. All in all, I did not like the book and I wouldn't suggest reading it unless historical love stories are books you love.

This is a true story of two young sisters in the 1800's who are presumed able to speak to the dead.
