Hoe Meer Chocola, Hoe Zoeter Je Baby? (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
I read this during my fifth pregnancy and I thought it was fascinating! The how and why of what's going on is far more interesting and motivating than a list of do's and don'ts during pregnancy. I wanted to exercise and eat better because I gained a deeper understanding of what's going on inside. I learned more about the long list of benefits for taking care of our emotional and physical health during pregnancy. It was just an extra bonus that reading this helped me feel less guilt for my dark chocolate cravings. Also, I learned that it's not a fluke that I accurately predicted the gender of my last two babies when I was four weeks pregnant. HCG levels are higher for girls than boys and I'm convinced that's what causes my morning sickness. I start feeling lousy at four weeks with my girls and with my boys it doesn't really hit until 6 weeks. If I wanted to be an overbearing grandmother then this is the book I would buy for my kids to read while the grandkids are in utero. The reaction I had to this book was, "oh, that's interesting."Two facts, however, were fascinating to me- 1. Some of the baby's cells sneak across the placenta and embed themselves in my body. This is why when I was pregnant with Lillian, I got weird plaques on the the skin of my upper torso- IT WAS LILLIAN'S SKIN SLOUGH. Some of these sneakers are stem cells, so they stick around and BECOME PART OF ME, making liver or thyroid or whatever kind of cells they turn into. Thus, I am still carrying around every child I've ever carried, even ones I might have unknowingly miscarried, and they are working to make my body function. AND because the kid gets half of their cells from the father, it's not just the baby's cells... it's Tyler's too. Creepy.2. How long your ring finger is compared to your index finger is directly proportional to how much testosterone you were exposed to in utero. People who have longer ringer fingers (like me) got more and thus I am more likely to be a more masculine female- better at analytical reasoning like math and science, better physical prowess (THAT one didn't happen), and more likely to take risks. Also, I'm more likely to be a lesbian. I'm not, though. People with longer index fingers, on average, have better verbal skills. It's like some kind of palmistry, but real.

A little fluffy, but interesting stuff and seems to be well researched.
