When Lisa Atwood goes to visit a friend of her mother's and her daughter, Marguerite, in a nearby town, Lisa doesn't expect to have a good time. But both girls ride, and soon they're on their mounts and things are looking up. Then Marguerite takes off on her own, leaving Lisa on a strange trail. Then the old, sweet-natured mare stumbles and Lisa is thrown. She can't ride or walk. The mare stays with Lisa, Protecting the injured girl and keeping her warm and sheltered from the rain that begins to fall. Can the horse care for Lisa until help arrives?
