How To Ruin Your Boyfriend's Reputation (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
Elkeles attempts to persuade readers that being apart from someone for a year and reconnecting for one week is enough to make a relationship, or one that will last. So many false notes here. It seems that Amy becomes more immature and childish as her character develops. Everyone is supposed to think her quirky narcissism is funny, but it just grates on the nerves. The development of bootcamp is so implausible and the consequences for her boyfriend just do not hold water. The plot falls apart. I do however, like that Elkeles creates a character, Amy, who strongly holds to a new developed sense of religion and a desire to choose sexual abstinence. In YA world full of sixteen year olds tackling sex, few writers tackle the choice of sexual abstinence. How does a couple further express their love when they have both accepted the challenge of sexual abstinence? Elkeles may not write this choice with too much depth or believability, but I love that she's created a character who sticks to her religious convictions in the face of so much pressure to engage in sex. While Elkeles has other protagonists from other novels make different choices, and navigates them with good sound sex ed information, it's also refreshing to read the development of a character who chooses religious convictions. Elkeles overs a lot of territory, and that is why I continue to read her works.Yes, this is a one start rating. Why? Avi really never gets consequences for disobeying commands - not plausible. Amy is glorified as a leader when so many of her choices are selfish in nature - again, not plausible. Selfish people don't get the respect of peers, instead they get demoted. So - I'm going to review the trilogy here. (How to Ruin a Summer Vacation; How to Ruin my Teenage Life & How to Ruin Your Boyfriend's Reputation.) Thankfully, the main character, Amy, clearly admits, several times, that she is a drama queen. Because she is. And she is clearly a city girl. Because the reader has to get used to her drama-queen-ness in order to enjoy the books. I know very few teenage girls who would behave or do the things Amy does. Her boyfriend, Avi, is the most patient 19-year old in the entire world. However, I expect the trilogy to appeal to my high school students anyway. I definitely prefer the chemical reaction trilogy.
