Stefan Kanfer has put together an excellent primer for those wanting to learn about the life of Humphrey Bogart. Tough Without A Gun is a fair, balanced and unbiased overview of this Hollywood legend. It contains neither extraneous minutiae nor is burdened by analysis. If morein-depth detail is what you seek, you won't find it here. But, Mr. Kanfer does provide a com-plete bibliography and index, which includes a list of Bogart's stage and screen credits. There aretwo sections of photographs that give you a visual glimpse through his early life and career. A quick trip through the life of Bogart, pausing occasionally to reflect on what makes his persona so enduringly appealing and how it evolved throughout his career. The focus remains mostly on his work and includes descriptions of the plays and movies he appeared in; there's not a lot of depth when it comes to anything but his acting. As a career overview, fairly interesting; as a biography, could have done with some fleshing out.
