I, Too, Am America (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

Collier, B. & Hughes. L. (2012). I too am America. New York: Simon & Schuster Books For Young Readers.Coretta Scott King AwardChoice BookThis book discusses African Americans. They used to not be able to do what everyone else could. This book tries to show that we are all the same, we are all Americans. The illustrations in this book are powerful. They send a great message about the way the country needed to turn. When covering civil rights or celebrating Black History Month, I would suggest this book. Great for k-5th. The message was very powerful to me! I originally picked this book up because it was labeled as a book that honors Black History Month. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and feel it could be used in a variety of different ways across the curriculum. It is by an influential writer, exemplifies exceptional poetry and can be used to show a specific point of view. I would use this book in any class because I think it can appeal to students of a variety of different ages.
