Ich, Mein Karma Und Er (Roman) (2008) - Plot & Excerpts

Amanda is a freelance writer who wants to be a Yoga instructor. However, to make rent, she writes for the "For Idiots" series. She's down on her luck in both the romance and the finance departments when her agent offers her the chance to write the book, "Enlightenment for Idiots."Amanda takes you on a journey through India with her, where she attempts just about every type of Yoga, meditation, and spiritual methodology known to man.A surprise is in store for Amanda, though, one that will change her life. And she finds, as Dorothy did, that "if I ever go looking for my heart's desire again, I won't look any further than my own backyard; because if it isn't there, I never really lost it to begin with."Cushman paints a beautiful and vibrant picture of Amanda's travels. I was craving Indian food the entire time I was reading it. I could even feel my knees hurting in empathy with Amanda's from when she kneeled on a hard floor for hours, meditating.Highly recommend it. I absolutely loved this book. The main character, Amanda, I could see being a friend of mine and at times her life reminded me of my own or of my close friends' lives. The author made the story come to life. I could not put the book down!I think why I liked this book so much is because of the beginning setting: San Francisco. I live in Santa Cruz, so there are references to the Bay Area, especially San Francisco. It is also about a girl who practices yoga and being someone who has practiced on and off for the past ten years made the story really connect to my personal life. The author also does a fantastic job describing inner emotions, both positive and negative. I also love how Cushman describes India. India is a place I would love to visit, and I'm not sure if I'll make there in this life time, but Cushman makes it come alive; from the scents to the scenery. The book is easy to read and flows so smoothly. Each chapter has either a famous quote by a yogi or Hindu guru, or a yoga pose with perhaps wordage that an instructor may say. These are meant to connect to the chapter, and if you are smart and paying attention you will understand the connection. This book is also worth exploring again if you fail to meet all the connections. If you fail to be "enlightened."I highly recommend this book for all people who love Eastern theology and culture. I recommend it for all modern women and all yoga practitioners in the West. Wonderful story and Amanda is fun to follow.
