If Loving You Is Wrong: The Shocking True Story Of Mary Kay Letourneau (1999) - Plot & Excerpts

I got this on my kindle for 99 cents. this is all I would have paid for it. i imagine most people have heard of Mary Kay Letourneau. the teacher who had sexual relations with a 13 year old former student. she got pregnant by Vili and it was not too long before people found out about this "affair" Mary Kay swore she was in love with the boy and Vili was willing. Soon this made world wide news. Mary ended up in jail for a short period after giving birth to a baby girl. the mother of Vili said she did not want to press charges although she felt it was wrong. Mary Kay was told to stay away from the boy but that lasted less than one month when she was caught with Vili again and wonder of wonders got pregnant again. so back in jail for Mary Kay, she gave birth to a second child in jail where she remained until Vili was 18 and "legal" the book was written awhile ago in 1999. it added a few pages update in 2004. before Mary Kay and Vili married. this book also covered Mary's family and life while growing up. her father's affair with another woman that resulted in two pregnancies. Mary kay strikes me as a very immature woman who clearly has some mental issues to deal with. this book is okay. I only ordered it because it was a deal of the day for 99 cents. I guess it gives some information I did not read about. This was an "in your face" news for a few years. Last time i heard about them Mary and Vili married in 2005. I never saw them but I guess there were tv movies made { so what else is new?} Okay read at best.

This was a very intriguing read. I'm always interested in the psychology behind things, and this book filled in some of the why behind this case. The notoriety of this case was beyond comprehension, but it amazed me that other countries viewed this as a love story opposed to a crime. I'm not really sure how I feel about it - clearly the woman had some mental problems, and her childhood could have easily clouded her future. I do admit I felt a bit sorry for her while reading this, more so than I did several years ago from media alone. A quick Google search revealed that Mary Kay and Vili are married and still together (2013). I wouldn't have predicted that all those years ago. There was apparently something special between the teacher and the boy whether it made sense to the rest of the world or not.

What do You think about If Loving You Is Wrong: The Shocking True Story Of Mary Kay Letourneau (1999)?

I was surprised after reading this book to discover I had changed my mind somewhat about this whole incident. I was probably like most people offended and outraged at a teacher sexually abusing a student. However, I came to understand this was no ordinary case of molestation. I truly came to believe it was a love match between adult and child. Who was the child and who was the adult is the big question? I just feel the teacher in question was suffering from a mental illness and arrested emotional development. This does not excuse the teacher's bad behavior; she should have waited until the boy was older to consummate the relationship.

Mary Kay's father was a chauvinist, anti-abortionist, homophobic, and adulterer. He was also unapologetic for his actions. Her mother was able to ignore everything unpleasant. Mary Kay was an apple that didn't fall from the tree. Although I followed the trial, this book was an eye opener.Vili Faulaau was a manipulator, Mary Kay was a manipulator, they were made for each other. Neither felt their actions were anything but TRUE love, and felt nothing they did could hurt anyone. The most amazing thing is family, friends, coworker and others sided with Mary Kay. If is was Mary Kay than it was OK. (Would they feel the same if it were their child?). In all of this Mary Kay wanted a movie deal, her lawyers wanted to be paid for interviews and Vili's mother wanted to be paid for pictures. These were real people, not fictional characters. The book goes through 1999. If you follow the news, Mary Kay is back in it. I can only say the back-story is amazing, amazing, amazing - my head is still shaking. Be sure to read the acknowledgements and update at the end. This is a must read - amazing.

Its not exactly well written, but its a decent enough documentary. The author does a good job of portraying different angles of the story, including the effect it had on their families, children, students, communities etc. You end up feeling sorry for both the main and secondary characters of this drama (especially her children) and its open ended as to drawing conclusions. Mary Kay is clearly very disturbed, so desperate for someone to love her. I came to believe its a true love story, as in it would not have happened between her and any other male student. Its not surprising, therefore, that they have gotten married since. However, she was certainly not an adult dealing with it emotionally, they could have waited. But then again, if she was more emotionally mature, it likely would not have happened in the first place...
