If This Isn't Nice, What Is?: Advice For The Young (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
A great collection of graduate speeches that are sharp, witty and full of sarcastic knowledge for the young. A good reminder for those of us who are a bit older to remember what is important in life. A message to stop and notice "If this isn't nice, I don't know what is." To not focus on the large triumphs, but to notice the smaller ones...a lemonade under a tree or the moment after a kiss. I want my children to read this book before they graduate and transition from a student to full-time adulthood. Hopefully they will see the bigger picture of life before life passes them by. Wow. Wow, wow, wow. If these quotes don't convince you to go out and read this book immediately, then you definitely shouldn't read this book. “Whenever my children complain about the planet to me, I say 'Shut up, I just got here myself'.” “It is a tragedy, perhaps, that human beings can get so much energy and enthusiasm from hate. If you want to feel ten feet tall and as though you could run a hundred miles without stopping, hate beats pure cocaine any day. Hitler resurrected a beaten, bankrupt, half-starved nation with hatred and nothing more. Imagine that.” “And don’t try to make yourself an extended family out of ghosts on the Internet. Get yourself a Harley and join the Hell’s Angels instead.” I wish I could find more quotes about community. I think that's an interesting thing that Vonnegut points out as vitally important in the human life. And the most powerful thing of all, stopping and saying, "If this isn't nice, what is?"
