Il Mio Corpo Elettrico: Romanzo (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
I enjoyed elements of this book but at times I found the story and the charcter - Mary - frustrating. I appreciate that her weight issues went back to her childhood, but her self loathing at the beginning of the book was irritating. I understand her food issues to some extent, caused by her childlessness and feeling herself unworthy of her handsome husband etc but it all amounted to her wasting her life and I really disliked her for this.I felt her husband was the more likeable character, and I really felt sorry for him. He clearly loved his wife and tried to encourage her to make more of her life but at the end of the day I dont blame him for leaving - although a note on your 25th wedding anniversary when youre due to go out with friends was not the kindest way of doing a runner! However, it got Mary off her backside and ultimately it changed her life. Some of the things that happened along the way were a bit far-fetched- bank staff giving her a lift (really?), Mums asking her to babysit so soon, the car accident and jumping in a van full of men could have been a dumb move!; but it was a steady read and I went along with it, hoping that at the end her life with her husband, her health and her opinion of herself would improve at the end of this adventure. I was therefore a bit annoyed by the ending......surely after 25 years of marriage she needed some closure at least.....? I wasn't sure whether to give this book a 2 or 3 star rating. I chose 3 because the writing is very well done, the story is good, but it didn't speak to me. I couldn't relate to the main character, Mary, in a lot of ways. She was obese and a closet eater, and although I have been known to sneak food now and then, I have never had an addiction to it the way she did. That's not really the part that I didn't get though. I understand addictions and issues that you have no control over whether physical or mental, but it was more the decisions she made when she went to find her husband that I didn't understand. A lot of her choices didn't make much sense to me. I was glad that she was able to "find herself", but it was strange the way the story ended. Gooch's disappearance and lengthy absence did not fit his profile from the rest of the story. He appeared to be totally committed to Mary, loved her without condition or restraint. For him to just leave, and never return, was out of character from how he was described earlier in the story. The plot was good and it was an interesting story line, but it didn't really bring out many emotions in me. I didn't get caught up in it the way I like. It may be different for another type of personality. Because it is well written, flows smoothly, makes sense, etc.
