This book had its moments but, overall, it was a disappointment. The two qualities that saved me from applying a one star rating were Blatty's trademark poetic descriptions and a clever ending that I never saw coming. Whereas his earlier works soared, this book dragged until the very end and was laced with poorly developed characters and unconvincing dialogue. Not a complete loss but not up to this master of horror's standards. I'd give this 1.5 stars if possible. While I mostly (though not always) enjoyed Blatty's style in this story, I thought the characters were too cliche' and the plot ultimately unoriginal. Anyone who hasn't read much in the ghost story genre or seen a one or two of the movies mentioned in other reviews might enjoy this a lot more. But I have, so the book (especially the ending) was a huge disappointment. Had i read this around the age of 13, I would have probably loved it.
What do You think about Il Traghettatore (1999)?
This was a good ghost story. Wasn't expecting the ending.
