After reading this first book (which was amazing) I was a little hesitant on reading the second in the series, since many times the second is not as good as the first book. This is not the case with this book. After a few chapters you are drawn back into the book and once again can't put it down. Lorne is hunting down a mad killer, while her daughter gets kidnapped and tortured and her partner gets killed. WOW!! Great book. Moving on to book 3 DI Lorne Simpkins’ partner and close friend, DS Pete Childs, is killed in the opening pages of this story. Lorne spends the days between then and Pete’s funeral/wake continuing in her quest to incarcerate ‘The Unicorn’, a notorious serial killer who authorities have been after for eight years after he was implicated in the murder of a drug baron. The Unicorn’s methods are gruesome and he has also killed two police officers. He has kidnapped Lorne’s teenage daughter, Charlie, and Lorne is still allowed to stay part of the investigation.I have to admit to quite a fair bit of disappointment in this book. It had the makings of a really good story - a female British detective investigating a serial killer. However, I found it to be just a bit too far fetched. I do appreciate that it IS fiction - but for me, the secret behind a good story is for it to be sufficiently credible and this really was not. Also, it was just a fraction too flowery and romantic for my personal taste.I have to add that I downloaded this ‘revised edition’ at the end of November 2011 - it still has a number of punctuation issues, particularly with commas. This did make it very difficult to read.I do believe the author has talent and sincerely hope she is able to secure an editor/publisher who is able to help channel her undoubted abilities.
