I thoroughly enjoyed seeing these rough and tumble characters embrace a surprising vulnerability as they sought their happily ever after. I've always been a fan of Rie Warren's work. She has a real gift for generating emotion with the reader, whether the action makes you laugh, cry or want to scream at the villain. In this story of Mayce and Hawke she exceeded my expectations.Two men, on opposite sides of a military conflict find attraction and ultimately love in the future world Warren created. The differences between the Mayce and Hawke are key to portraying what they actually bring to the relationship. Hawke is a Freelander...his world is harsh, but there is love everywhere he turns. His friends and comrades mean everything to him. Until he meets Mayce, a warrior whose world is ordered, regimented and soulless. It is touching to see the effect these two have on each other as their love grows. Even though in Mayce's world their love is forbidden, and destined to be doomed, he is willing to forsake the only life he has known in the name of love. What I loved best about this book was the solid yet sassy style Warren seems to have patented. Her writing is strong, direct and easy to stick with. One of my favorite lines in the book - "I probably smelled like him too. A little rough, a little wild, a lot earthy..."
