In The Dark Streets Shineth: A 1941 Christmas Eve Story (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

Perfect ten minute read giving you a window into Christmas 1941 when Churchill joined Roosevelt in Washington to plan an Allied strategy. Not much is said about the strategy, rather it is about Christmas and the meaning of Christmas that these two leaders used to speak and comfort during the dark and uncertain times. David McCullough ties together the lighting of the National Christmas Tree with a brief history of two beloved Christmas carols. The book comes with a DVD of the live performance McCullough did with the Morman Tabernacle Choir. This little gem of a book recreates the events of Christmas 1941 when Winston Churchill secretly came to the U.S. to meet with FDR. McCullough always does a brilliant job of setting the historical stage and bringing you there. This was a talk he gave with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir a few years ago, and though the fireside is lovely, the music wonderful, I loved this little book with its historical photos and the speeches of Churchill and FDR printed in full. The inspirational remarks of these two great men to the greatest generation stand in stark contrast to today. They knew the hardships and sacrifices that would be required and weren't afraid to tell the people the truth and ask for them. A far cry from today when we were asked to go shopping so the terrorists wouldn't win.
