Inferno Di Ghiaccio (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

Cold Dawn promised an adventure in the small town of Black Falls, Vermont, in which a a rugged smoke jumper, Nick, investigates a fire, discovered by a search-and-rescue expert, Rose. Rugged men, strong women, a good mystery, and the beauty of Vermont sounded like a perfect book for me. This is the first book that I read in the Black Falls series. Cold Dawn is a continuation of the previous books in the series, and I found it very difficult to follow the story due to the number of characters, their back stories, and their relationships. The book included characters living in Vermont, trying to solve who started the fire that resulted in the dead body found by Rose, another death and investigation in California, where Rose's brother lives and extended family and friends visit/live/escape to, and more characters living in Washington DC, recovering, resting, and escaping. The characters were paramedics, Secret Service, Special Forces, fire jumpers, search and rescue, state troupers, and firemen. Several characters were related, dated or currently dating, or were guardians of their little brothers. I could not keep everyone straight. Even the President's family played a role in this mystery! Cold Dawn showed great promise. The characters were complex and interesting. I'd love to get to know the characters a few at a time, as they face more mysteries. I would recommend books by Carla Neggers, but I would recommend that you start at the beginning of her series. I started reading Cold Dawn not realizing it was book three in a series. I want to be fair since I jumped into a story already in progress but....Smoke jumpers, paramedics, special forces, search and rescue, secret service, reporter.... Oh my! Each character was so full of drama it was just a bit too much. Also with the exception of Grit, the Navy SEAL, all the characters seemed cold, not just professionally, but also personally. For a group of people that are family and/or grew up together, their interaction was stiff, guarded, just did not ring true. But I did want to see how the arson mystery was resolved so points for that. but I did figure it out, the red herring was so obvious and did not make sense on any level. So I feel this is more of a 2.5 star read but I gave it three because I did care enough to finish the book.

What do You think about Inferno Di Ghiaccio (2010)?

I love all the characters but there are just to many in this book for me to keep up with.
