Inherit The Dead (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

This is an interesting concept, and I love the idea that the authors all worked together for a good cause. There's a good noir atmosphere to the story. Unfortunately, this is an instance of having too many cooks in the kitchen because the plot meanders through different suspects and settings. Since there isn't one clear vision (which is also hinted at during some of the chapters--about how the detective is running around chasing all these unrelated strands), it's up to the last author to try and tie everything together. It does all work out pretty well, but it isn't a really amazing finale because this book by definition blends together multiple voices. Twenty bestselling authors, each contributing a chapter to an overarching storyline about a former NYPD cop, Perry Christo, who is hired by a wealthy socialite Julia Drusilla to find her missing daughter, who is soon set to inherit a fortune, is the premise of the book Inherit the dead. Unfortunately, my enthusiasm for the impressive catalogue of writers soon fell flat after I began to read this book. I persisted, as I had faith in some of the authors, hoping that their individual writing style would shine through and make this book more enjoyable. Sadly though, it comes across as a disjointed piece of work, with a bland plot and dull characters. I really wanted to like it more as I greatly respect the effort that these writers have made to collaborate, especially as the proceeds go to a worthy cause - Safe Horizon, a victim assistance agency.
